When it comes to the world’s largest cities, the general idea is that the biggest cities by surface automatically include the largest population, but some of you may be surprised to find out that things are a little bit more complicated than that.
Today we’re going to present a top 10 regarding the world’s largest cities proper by population, and just in case you don’t know what a city proper is, we’re going to shed some light on the matter.
A city proper is characterized by a certain region within a big city that usually features its own boundaries and its own unique form of government, but there are numerous cases when a city proper actually extends much further beyond the boundaries of a simple city and encompasses neighboring villages or other localities. A city proper is a locality defined according to legal or political boundaries and an administratively recognised urban status that is usually characterised by some form of local government. Cities proper and their boundaries and population data may not include suburbs.
World Urbanization Prospects, a UN publication, defines population of a city proper as "the population living within the administrative boundaries of a city or controlled directly from the city by a single authority.
" The book continues to say that "city proper as defined by administrative boundaries may not include suburban areas where an important proportion of the population working or studying in the city lives." This definition does not give an accurate picture of the urban area or metropolitan area of cities. Using this strictly administrative definition, many cities will be included on this list that are smaller than their urban area. However, many Chinese cities included govern territories that extend well beyond the traditional "city proper" into suburban and rural areas.
Determining the world's largest cities depends on which definitions of city are used. The United Nations uses three definitions for what constitutes a city, as not all cities may be classified using the same criteria. Cities may be defined as the cities proper, the extent of their urban area, or their metropolitan regions.

Now you're beginning to see why it's so hard to pin down a definition and explanation.You can find these items just by looking through your junk drawer and office supply cabinet at home or at work. Or you can visit a thrift store. Using ephemera on a scrapbook page, card or altered project adds a unique and creative flair.
